History of Loxahatchee Groves

The history of Loxahatchee Groves began in 1902 when Southern States Land and Timber Company (SSLT) bought two million acres of land at 25 cents from which Loxahatchee Groves became a part of. Upon the completion of the West Palm Beach (C-51 Canal) in 1917, SSLT’s sales manager George Frederick Bensel who then later on became the company’s president, became motivated by the waterfront views to design a farming community. With the help of SSLT’s engineer, Torvald Garfield Thorgesen, Bensel worked on completing the first topographical map of Loxahatchee Groves for three years. Back then, they called it “Loxahatchee Farms”. Along with others, Benzel and Thorgesen created the Palm Beach Loxahatchee Company and acquired 6,500 acres from SSLT that they needed for the community.
Only a few of the western lake communities where still around by the year 1924. However, Loxahatchee Groves continued to flourish. There was already a road that connected Loxahatchee Groves to West Palm Beach. This road was beside Okeechobee Boulevard and West Palm Beach Canal, which later on became known as Southern Boulevard. After which, there was vast development in Loxahatchee Groves. Palm Beach Loxahatchee Company constructed almost 30 miles of roads and parallel canals. The Loxahatchee Groves Drainage District (pioneer of the Loxahatchee Groves Water Control District) was then founded to manage these. Bensel played a major role in the opening of a combined post office, gas station, and grocery store in the community.
Even though the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane did the biggest damage to the towns around Lake Okeechobee, Loxahatchee Groves also suffered from major damage 32 miles to the east. Almost all of the houses in the area fell from their foundations. Thorgesen’s remained.
It was during the 1930s when the agriculture in Loxahatchee Groves thrived. Thomas Keats Bensel, George Bensel’s brother, started a citrus planting project which inspired the residents to plant an additional 56,000 trees. From a packinghouse, there was a small railroad constructed at S.R. 80, now known as I-95, where the fruits where transported. The residents of Loxahatchee Groves where finally able to enjoy electricity when a pump was placed on D road that pulled water from West Palm Beach Canal. In 1949, Loxahatchee Baptist Church opened with George Bensel’s assistance together with the Southern Baptist Association as well as the local residents.
In 1958, Loxahatchee Investments acquired Loxahatchee Groves. The production of tomatoes and citrus fruits slowly stopped after George Bensel’s passing in 1961.
During the 80s and 90s when Wellington and The Acreage were developed, both being surrounding areas of Loxahatchee Groves, the rural lifestyle of the residents somehow became vulnerable. To prevent any unwanted changes in the community, the association established their motto “Love it and leave it alone.” Many years after its humble beginnings, Loxahatchee Groves now stands as “Florida’s Last Frontier”. This beautiful town finally became its own independent municipality in 2006 when it was incorporated by Palm Beach County.
